Ocer Celebrates International Women’s Day

An Educative and fun day it was

Ocer Campion joined the rest of the world to mark International Women’s day; a worldwide event that celebrates women’s achievements – from political to social. The day is also used to make continuous calls for gender equality.

The day was commemorated under two themes; “Be Bold for Change” (International) and “Women’s Empowerment in a changing world of work” (Uganda). The celebrations kicked off with a mass celebration led by the Head teacher, Father John Chachu. In his homily, Father Chachu called upon everyone to respect women. He said, “Women are the earth.”

Since it was their day, it is not surprising then that the Ocer girls were at the center of the commemoration. The girls actively participated in the mass celebration; some were seen in the choir, gleefully humming beautiful melodies while others were seated beside the main celebrant devotedly and gladly carrying out their duties at the altar.

After mass, the Ocer student body together with the school faculty convened in the newly constructed hall for various performances. Some students took to the catwalk as they modelled different outfits depicting different cultures, others took to the floor to show off different cultural dances while others strongly condemned violence against women through drama.

The different speakers urged girls to be bold, pursue their dreams and realize that education is the greatest empowerment tool. Speaker after speaker echoed and carried messages urging girls to work hard, pursue their dreams and most importantly to know that they can be anything they want to be.

To break the stereotype that some jobs and roles are reserved for a particular gender, students took to the stage donning on outfits depicting various professions. What came out so distinctly is that in this display of professions, both girls and boys can belong to the same profession. On the stage there were female and male doctors, civil and mechanical engineers.

To crown the day, the girls and boys took to the pitch where they played a friendly match with Gulu Central College. In the field, the girls run and kicked at the ball as if they were world cup champions. What a merry making and educative it was!
