God's Grandeur

The world is charged with the grandeur of God.
It will flame out, like shining from shook foil;
It gathers to a greatness, like the ooze of oil
Crushed. Why do men then now not wreck his rod?
Generations have trod, have trod, have trod;
And all is seared with trade; bleared, smeared with toil;
And wears man's smudge and shares man's smell: the soil
is now bare, nor can foot feel, being shod.

And for all this, nature is never spent;
There lives the dearest freshness deep down things;
And though the last lights off the black West went
Oh, morning, at the brown brink eastward, springs -
Because the Holy Ghost over the bent
World broods with warm breast and with ah! bright wings.

~Gerard Manley Hopkins, S.J.

OCJC Students celebrate Ugandan Independence Day

On the 9th October 1962 Uganda became independent of Britain. Exactly 49 years later on a very bright day, students and staff members celebrated this historical event. The first common act was the Holy Mass at 10.30 a.m. led by Fr. Jim Strzok. We began by raising the flag and singing our national anthem. During the homily Fr. Jim engaged us to think about our dreams for Uganda, for Ocer Campion and for ourselves. He asked students, teachers and staff members to share their dreams with each other. Georg, our new volunteer from Germany, deputy headmaster Johnmary, and some of the students voiced their dreams. As every Sunday, Ocer´s choir also contributed with its lively and emotional songs and hence created an appropriate atmosphere. Special highlights were the two football matches (“soccer” for our American friends) in the afternoon. Our school teams, “Young Stars” and “Giants,” had great competitions. Lots of spectators were around to cheer the teams. After two 30-minute halves, the girls’ match ended in a tie! Penalty kicks brought the “Young Stars” the victory. The boys then played the usual 90 minutes. Another tie game! Over ten penalty kicks finally brought the “Giants” the win. So both “Young Stars” and “Giants” were happy to be winners. All people at Ocer will remember this day!
