When one dreams alone,
it remains but a dream.
When we dream together, it
is the beginning of reality.

The Society of Jesus in Uganda

The tradition and mission of the Society of Jesus (Jesuits) is “to be in solidarity” with suffering brothers and sisters, particularly through prayer and spiritual ministries, advocacy, and financial assistance. For northern Uganda, our channel for assistance has long been the local Little Sisters of Mary Immaculate and the Catholic Archbishop. In 2003, the Jesuit Refugee Service (JRS) opened a project. In 2005, the Jesuit Eastern Africa Province (EAP) committed to begin a secondary school there and, eventually, a parish/primary school. Three Jesuits now live in Gulu. Two teach at Gulu University and one promotes peace and cultural activities for both children and adults; some other Jesuits come and lead retreats. The two Jesuit directors for this project regularly travel to Gulu from Kampala, Uganda and Nairobi, Kenya to plan with the local people. They also alternate travel yearly to the United States to visit potential donors and to consult with professionals who have volunteered their expertise.
